Top 3 Graphic Design Mistakes You Should Avoid

If you own a business or are thinking about launching a business, you are going to need to either buy or create graphics for your business. For example, you may need to create a logo that will serve as a graphic identity for your brand.

But before you invest in a logo or any other graphic for your business you may wish to avoid the following common pitfalls that can cost you time and money.
#3 Lack of Originality
If you decide to create a logo or other design, avoid creating something that looks like an existing design. If you want your business to stand out in a positive way, create designs that are original. It is okay to be inspired by other designs but do your best to create something unique.Heeding this advice will also help you avoid unintentional Copywrite infringement. In the United States, Copywrite laws exist to protect original works of authorship or expressions such as graphic designs. It may be a good idea to consult an attorney if you have any doubts or concerns. We also recommend that you only purchase graphic design services from a reliable source that can guarantee originality or provide you with proper licenses for any pictures or images they provide that are not their original work.7eb66a3c-c06f-48f5-a8b0-f7b5d1c1f754A popular source to license photography and animations is Adobe. Here you can browse graphics and license them safely to use in flyers, websites and other design projects for your business.
#2. Poor Resolution
We have all seen what this mistake looks like and when you consider the large stacks of printed materials that suffer from this error it is not hard to imagine how costly it can be! To avoid this mistake, make sure that the designs you are printing out are the right size and resolution. If you design an item that is a lot smaller than the printed item, you will likely end up with a blurry image once it is printed. If your image is the right size but has poor resolution, you will still end up with a problem. The resolution for anything that is to be printed should be at least 300dpi (pixels per inch). Anything less than 300dpi on a printed image could result in pixelated images and blurry text.

We recommend that if you are going to get something printed, especially in large quantities, that you use a trusted vendor that will help you proof your images before printing them to make sure they are the right size and resolution. Or better yet, spend a few extra dollars to get a designer to order the items for you. In the long run, you will be better off ensuring that your marketing materials are flawless.

#1. The Wrong Format
The most common mistake that we see in graphic design is blurry and distorted images that are not the right size for a project. The best way to protect yourself from this issue is to make sure that your designs are available in a format that is highly editable, such as a vector format. In fact, one of the first things we request from our clients is a vector file of their logo. This helps us create designs that are different shapes and sizes without their logo becoming grainy or distorted. Vector images such as EPS, AI and some PDF allow for more flexibility and are excellent for creating graphics that frequently require resizing. In fact, key designs such as your company logo should be created as a vector and saved as a master file so you can use it with smaller items such as your business cards and letterhead, but also on larger surfaces, such as your corporate car or a billboard. DO NOT EVER let anyone sell you a company logo or comparable graphic without providing you with an original file or vector file. If all you have is a raster format such as a PNG or JPEG you will get to a point where you will try to stretch and resize the image and it will get blurry. You will then need to get the logo recreated in a vector format or create another logo altogether, which can get costly. We have had to do this for several of our clients who were sold logos and only received the raster files.
