Legislative Luncheon, featuring House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams and Senate President Pro Tempore David Shafer
This annual event will provide the opportunity to gain insight into the legislative calendar and to network with Gwinnett’s delegation. The upcoming session and what they see on the horizon for 2017 will be discussed.
About the Speakers
Stacey Y. Abrams is the House Minority Leader for the Georgia General Assembly and State Representative for the 89th House District. She is the first woman to lead either party in the Georgia General Assembly and is the first African-American to lead in the House of Representatives.
Abrams attended Spelman College and was named a Harry S. Truman Scholar. She received a master’s degree from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas and a J.D. from Yale Law School. She returned to Atlanta as a tax attorney at the Sutherland law firm and was subsequently appointed as the Deputy City Attorney for the City of Atlanta and is a founder of many businesses.
She has received the prestigious John F. Kennedy New Frontier Award, one of the Public Officials of the Year by Governing magazine and has also received the inaugural Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award from EMILY’s List.
Senate President Pro Tempore David Shafer, a Republican, was first elected to the Georgia State Senate in 2002. He represents Senate District 48, which includes portions of Fulton and Gwinnett counties. Previously, Senator Shafer served as chairman of the Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee and as an Administration Floor Leader for Governor Sonny Perdue. In addition to his duties as Senate President Pro Tempore, Senator Shafer is also vice chair of the Senate Insurance and Labor Committee and a member of the Senate Appropriations, Health and Human Services and Reapportionment and Redistricting Committees.
He is an ex-officio member of the Senate Regulated Industries and Utilities and Rules Committees. Senator Shafer is a business owner, investor and has an active history in the community.
